Biology in Practice

Biology in Practice is a comprehensive student textbook written to support success in the Leaving Certificate Biology specification. It helps students develop a clear understanding of biological concepts, build essential scientific skills, and approach examinations with confidence.

Wild Apple Design was tasked with refreshing the title’s appearance, redesigning both the cover and the internal pages to create a contemporary, cohesive look throughout the series. Building on our strong background in developing complex educational programmes, we focused on creating a design that was visually appealing while remaining practical for classroom use. Particular attention was given to intuitive navigation, maintaining a unified visual style across the materials, and retaining the recognisable character of previous editions.

The full scheme includes a Student’s Book, a Workbook (Assessment and Exam Guide), a Lab Book (Laboratory Investigation Notebook), and a Teacher’s Guide.

Covers

For this project, our team developed a suite of covers designed to function both independently, clearly distinguishing each component, and together as a cohesive visual set. Striking imagery combined with clear information design ensures the covers are engaging, accessible, and immediately appealing to students. As a suite of covers we feel these work really well, complimenting other books within the clients porfolio.

Exam Preparation Workbook

This resource contains over 200 pages of exam-style questions, designed to help students prepare effectively for assessments. Nature of Science questions are clearly indicated throughout, allowing learners to easily identify and focus on this key area. Each chapter includes revision questions as well as additional exam-style questions to reinforce understanding and exam technique, while higher-level questions are clearly marked to support students aiming for more advanced challenges.

Students Textbook

An extensive 600-page resource packed with carefully designed learning features which support students studying Leaving Certificate Biology. A key challenge in developing the book was balancing the integration of many different components while maintaining a visually engaging layout and a clear, intuitive structure. With such a large-scale project and demanding timelines, the design required careful planning and experience to ensure that students could easily navigate the content and move smoothly between topics.

 

Throughout the book, a wide range of visual and learning supports are seamlessly integrated into the page design. Detailed technical illustrations, many specially commissioned for the project, appear alongside high-quality laboratory photography, clearly presented equations, and well-structured tables and definitions. These elements are carefully woven together with experiment pages, review spreads, and summary sections, creating a cohesive learning experience that helps students engage with biological concepts.
